The carving was originally intended to be a full-length standing carving of St. Benedict. However, as work began, it quickly became apparent that the piece "wanted" to be a large bust of the saint. It took more than 100 hours over a nine month period to complete the piece. It was unveiled at the 150th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Saint Benedict's Prep School in Newark, NJ.
